Covington’s Business/Occupational License department is professionally staffed to escort new business owners and those renewing licenses through the process with ease. Whether you are establishing an in home occupation, or opening a local office for a major national firm, our Deputy Tax Collector will provide you with all the requirements and forms necessary to do so. We want this step of opening your business to be a smooth one, and have streamlined the renewal process for existing businesses.

  Requirements For A License

All applications must be submitted to the City of Covington Tax Collector for approval. License applications should be submitted at least two weeks before planned beginning of operation so that all of the following procedures can be completed.

Applications must be reviewed and approved by each of the following:

OCCUPATIONAL LICENSE DEPARTMENT (985) 898-4730
a.
St. Tammany Parish Health Unit (985) 893-6296 –
All persons who shall be engaged in manufacturing, processing, distributing, serving, selling or offering for sale, prepared food, beverages, liquors, milk or milk products for human consumption, must obtain a written permit issued by the St. Tammany Parish Health Unit.

b. Planning & Zoning Department (985) 898-4730 –
1. Confirm with this office that your chosen location is properly zoned for the type of business you are planning to open.
2. Confirm with this office if you will be required to: purchase a building permit, meet landscaping requirements, meet signage requirements, meet parking requirements, obtain Fire Marshall approval

c. Liquor, Wine or Beer License Requirements
1. City license applications – Occupational License Dept. (985) 898-4730
2. Affidavit of publication in the St. Tammany Farmer, inserted twice
3. Health Department permit from St. Tammany Health Unit (985) 892-8181
4. Police check by the Covington Police Department (application through Occupational License Dept.)
5. State Alcohol and Tobacco Control Office (985) 871-8327 – check with this office for state license requirements
